One of the biggest things that people think about when they are going to travel solo is their safety.

Just how safe will I be? Do I need protection? Do I need to let somebody know where I am?

Those are just some of the thoughts solo travelers might think of.

However there is some good news.

Traveling by yourself is actually a very safe thing to do. In fact, many people all over the world have traveled by themselves all the time.

Now I know it can be nervous for people traveling by themselves for their first time. After all you are going to some place new and different. You are heading to the unknown and it can definitely be fearful.

But you don’t have to be afraid. You don’t have to be nervous.

The reason for this is because you already have all the tools and skills you need to survive on your own. I mean, look at yourself now. You already got this far on your own. Doing the same thing you are doing now in a whole new country is no different.

Which is why you have nothing to worry about when you are going to travel by yourself.

And if you are planning on traveling solo sometime soon or in the future, I have some amazing tips and strategies that can help you out.

1) Research Your Destination

You always want to plan ahead of things. When ever you are going to travel someplace, you want to make sure to do as much research as you can. That way you can know all the things you are able to do. Not only that but you’ll be able to know all the places you should avoid and also find out what the local scams are.

By doing your research about the destination you are going to, you can avoid all the unnecessary hassles and bad situations that you might run across.

2) Trust Your Instincts

Your instincts is one of the most powerful skills that you have at your disposal. If something doesn’t feel right or sounds off, you can simply avoid it by walking away or by saying the word no. There is nothing wrong with listening to your inner self.

There was plenty of times when my instincts helped guide me along my journeys. Like one time when I was in Vegas, and some shady person came by and asked me if I wanted to go with them in their car to have some fun. I said nope and walked away. Or that other time when I was in Thailand and somebody asked me to use my phone. I declined and kept walking away.

The point is, you never know what might happen when you are in some place you aren’t familiar with. So the best thing to do is to listen to yourself and avoid anything that is suspicious or dangerous.

3) Have A Fake Wallet

Sometimes when you travel, you might run into thieves. They might try to either rob you, or they may play it coy and bump into you while sneakily stealing your things. Although this is pretty rare to happen, it may happen to you. Which is why it’s better to be safe than sorry.

I would suggest for you to keep a fake wallet with you. It could contain maybe a dollar or two, and maybe some expired cards. This would be handy in case a thief ever tries to rob you. That way when he sees the fake wallet, he’ll be satisfied with it thinking he’s got something valuable and go away. Meanwhile you’ll have your real valuables hidden away some place else on your body.

4) No Is Your Friend

No is a word that you need to be friends with. One that you’ll be using quite frequently during your travels. You need to learn that saying no is perfectly fine, and that you have no reason to always be saying yes to other people.

I know sometimes when you are having fun with other strangers, it can be kind of hard to say no. After all, you want to have fun and not disappoint everyone else. But in doing so, it can prevent anything bad from happening.

For instance, you might be out partying with strangers and they keep offering you drinks. It is perfectly fine to turn them down because it can lead to serious consequences if you get drunk or passed out.

Or if somebody keeps offering you something or asking to borrow things. It is perfectly fine to turn them down. After all, you are by yourself on these trips, so you need to learn to care for yourself and watch your own back.

Your trip is about you, yourself, and nobody else.

5) Ask Locals For Help

Often times the best thing you can do when traveling to some place new is to ask around for help. There are many places you can look at where locals will tell you everything you need to know. With places like Reddit or TripAdvisor and many others sharing details about all the insider knowledge of the location you are visiting. You can ask any questions you might want to know about and get answers back pretty fast.

Aside from places like the internet, you can also ask your local lodge or hotel that you are staying at for any information about the area. After all, who would know the place better than those that are living there. Be sure to also ask about the local scams or dangerous places you should avoid.

Anytime I travel, I will always use these resources and ask around locals or people who been there for any tips and advice that I should know of.

6) Carry A Whistle

One useful item you should carry around with you is a whistle. You can use a whistle when something is not right and alert people of your whereabouts. This way they can find you and see if you are safe. You can also use it to scare off any bad animals that are coming your way. It’s a great tool to have, and one that doesn’t take up a lot of space.

7) Blend In

A good tip to go by is to always dress like the locals. This way you can avoid standing out and running into any bad situations.

This is especially true for some countries where you are not able to dress as you please. An example would be like some Muslim countries for females, where you have to cover up your body as showing too much skin can be perceived as offensive.

Which is why it is important to always do your research on the location you are going to. If you want to be treated right, then dress appropriately when you go there.

8) Don’t Go Out Alone At Night

Now depending on which countries you go to, you may want to be careful going out in the night time alone by yourself. For some countries, it is perfectly safe to go out by yourself at night. However for some other countries, it can be very dangerous.

So do some research and see if the place you are going to is absolutely safe at night or whether you need to be with somebody. Either way, if you absolutely must go out at night, I would suggest asking somebody you can trust to accompany you when you wander around the dark.

9) Have Multiple Copies Of Your Personal Documents

Now as we all know, every time we travel some place, we always hope for the best. We never want anything to happen to us while we are traveling. However it is important to always be prepared in case the worst does happen. After all, you never know what things might happen when you are out and about.

Which is why I suggest you to make copies of all your important documents. This can include your I.D, Insurance cards, or even your passport. You want to not only have copies on paper documents, but you also want to have it electronically as well in case you lose the paper documents. This way you can have a backup on top of another backup.

You want to make sure you store these copies in a really safe place like your personal bag or something so that it doesn’t get lost.

10) Know How To Call For Help

Doesn’t matter where ever you travel or even if you are traveling alone or with a group. It is always good to know the local emergency number of the area you are in. That way, if anything bad does happen, you are able to give them a call and help will be on the way. So do some research before you head out on your trip and find out what the local emergency numbers are.

11) Check In Regularly

This is something that you definitely want to do. No matter where in the world you travel, you should always let your friends and family know where you are going. Heck, not even just where you are going, but all the things you are going to do and plan on doing. Tell them your entire itinerary so that they will know everything you have planned. That way if anything does happen, you’ll have people back at home rushing to come help you out.

You should try to get a sim card to get WIFI on your phone or you can even visit local internet cafes. That way you can get in touch with your friends and family so that they can know you are alright.

Overall, traveling solo is a fun and exciting experience. It allows you to do whatever you want, whenever you want. It also teaches you a lot about yourself and how to be independent. It’s an experience that I think everybody should try out at least once in their lives.

As long as you follow these steps and use some common sense and good judgement, you should be able to travel anywhere around the world just fine.
