Often times when people think of travel, they think of one thing.
It can be expensive to travel. Even more so if you are a student.
However you should know that traveling doesn’t always have to be expensive. There are things you can do to reduce the cost. Over the years, I have learned some amazing budgeting tips that you can use to help see the world at an affordable price.
So here are my top 8 budgeting tips that every student traveler should know.
Food and drinks can be one of the most costliest expenses during your travels. After all we need to eat in order to survive.
Often times when people go out to travel they don’t really think of the costs associated with food. They think that because it’s a vacation, they are allowed to eat whatever they want. However this can lead to you spending much more than you should have.
Depending on what country you decide to visit, the cost of food can be cheap or expensive. Now eating the cheap foods is fine, it’s the expensive foods that’ll get you. So instead of eating something that might cost you a lot of money, try to opt for the cheaper foods so that you can start saving your money instead.
Pick A Destination You Can Afford
Did you know that different locations have different costs?
Yes! It’s true! Some locations are actually a lot more expensive than some other places. For instance, a hundred bucks might not last you a few days in Paris or Italy. But if you were to use that same hundred bucks in a place like Taiwan or China than it can be used for a lot longer.
Often times when people tend to travel to someplace, they don’t always think about the costs that they might have to deal with. For instance, things like transportation, activities, accommodations, and food all cost money. Some places cheaper than others. So you have to factor that into your expenses.
Also plane ticket prices can also be a tricky thing. Sure that ticket to UK might be cheaper than going to Asia, but the costs of doing things in the UK are also a lot higher.
Which is why before you plan on going on any trip, it is best to do some research and see all the costs that you might be spending. This way you can decide if the trip is indeed worth the cost of you going there.
Buy Your Ticket At The Right Time
Buying a plane ticket can be finicky and confusing.
Sometimes the prices are high, and sometimes the prices are low. So how do you know when is the best time to buy? Well that depends. As you know, it’s not always the best to book a ticket a few months early. It’s also not good if you want to wait till the last minute to book.
Instead what you should do is just continuously check at the prices for your destination. When it reaches a point where you consider is cheap and worth it, then go ahead and buy it.
A good app to use for this is the Skyscanner Price Alert. The way it works is that you enter the flight info on what you are looking for and it will give you alerts on when the price changes.
One of the best things to do that won’t cost you a lot of money if any is to volunteer yourself. You can help some locals in exchange for a free place to stay. You get a chance to give back to the community that is willing to help you. Not only that, but by doing this you can interact with the locals and learn many tips and tricks that tourists usually won’t know. It is an amazing experience that can change your life.
Try a Different Form Of Transportation
One of the best things you can do to reduce your cost is to try a different form of transportation.
After all, riding a plane and taking the taxi everywhere you go can definitely add up in costs. So instead why not take something else? See if the place you are visiting offers different kind of transportation.
For instance, instead of taking a taxi, you can try taking a bus. Or maybe use one of those rent a bike or scooter programs that let you travel short distances. You can also opt to try riding a train instead of flying on a plane if you are going to travel to farther distances. whatever it is, i’m sure there is an option that lets you ride for a cheaper cost.
Ditch The Hotel ~ Find Someplace Else To Sleep
Hotels can be one of the most costliest things for you to spend your money on during a trip. Instead why not try something else. You can use Airbnb or something similar to rent out a house or room at a cheaper cost. You can even look for opportunities to stay in somebody’s home as a gust. Even hostels will make a great place for you to stay if you are wanting to save some money.
It all depends on your budget, so look around at different choices and see which one is best for you.
Look For Attractions or Join a Tour Group
Instead of paying full price for tickets, you can often find cheaper discount passes or tickets online. Places like Viator.com, you can find more than 100 sightseeing card and passes that will save you a few bucks per activity on the card. Another site similar to viator is called We Love Citycards, which offers many of the same type of deals for 21 different countries. Or if you are in the US than you can try CityPass which has many discount cards for all the major cities across the country.
Besides discount cards, there are also tour groups that you can join on a discounted price. For example, some companies will offer weekend trips that are specifically geared towards students.
Find Student Discounts
Having a student card is one of the best things ever as a student. It allows you to get discounts at over 125,000 places in over a 100 countries all around the world. You can get tickets from flash sales on transatlantic flights for as low as $100 bucks or 35 percent discount on Eurail and many other offers as well.
Now some places will even accept a university card from your university, however the most common and best card to use is something called the International Student Identity Card or ISIC for short. This card will enable you to get discounts for many things all across the world.
As you can see, there are many different things that you can do while traveling as a student to save some money.
Traveling doesn’t have to be expensive. It all depends on how you want to prepare. As long as you do your research and plan with budgeting in mind than you can save quite a bit of money.
