When anybody thinks of national parks, a sandy desert definitely does not come to mind.
Most people will think of Yosemite, Yellowstone, Grand Canyon etc..You know those places that bring amazing views and scenery.
Not often would people think of a big open desert as some place that is fun to go to. However that can definitely be misleading. White Sands is a place of beauty and full of amazing views. It is filled with a wide ocean of beautiful white sands stretching across over 200 miles of desert. It is also the largest gypsum dune on the entire planet.
It’s so amazing in fact that it has just been named an official National Park in the USA.
It is definitely a sight to see.
So lets get into more details about this canyon.
Where Is White Sands National Park Located?
It is located in the northern Chihuahuan Desert in the United States of New Mexico
Getting to White Sands National Park can be a bit tricky as there is no planes, bus’s or anything that’ll take you to this beautiful location. You have to rent a car yourself and drive over here. The three closest locations to this area are the cities of Alamogordo, Las Cruces, and El Paso. The closest airport to White Sands is in El Paso, Texas which is about 85 miles away from the park.
Can You Visit Yourself Or Do You Need A Tour Guide
To my knowledge, there are no tours around that’ll take people to the White Sands. At least none that I could find. The only way to get here is to come here yourself. Which means you have to rent a car from any of the surrounding areas and drive over here.

When Is The Best Time To Visit?
Because this place is a desert, planning when you are going to come here is crucial. Depending on when you come here, temperatures can vary greatly all throughout the year.
During the summer season of June through August, you can expect day time temperatures to average out at about 95ºF (35ºC) all the way to as high as 110ºF (38º). While evening temperatures are much more cooler ranging from around 50-65ºF (10-18ºC).
I wouldn’t really recommend you to come here during the summer time as it can get very hot. But if you do, be sure to be prepared with lots of cool clothing, hats, and especially lots of water.
Aside from the summer time, you also have to watch out for the rainy seasons which can start from early July and last all the way to late September. These are the months when it can rain the most over here. So you always want to check out the weather forecast before coming here.
The best time I would recommend coming to this area is around the time of September all the way through May. This is when temperatures can be the best and won’t be too hot to handle. You can see sunny days with light winds all throughout this time of year.
How To Best Enjoy Your Experience
Because this sandy desert is so big and vast, that gives you a bunch of options of what you are able to do.
You are able to do whatever you want whenever you want.
The thing about this place is that there are not a lot of people here compared to other national parks. Meaning less people to bother you.
So take your time and relax.
Some things you can do over here includes:
- Sitting down or relax along the sandy dunes
- Climb up and down the dunes
- Grab a sled and go sand sledding
- Have a picnic across the sands, just be sure to throw away your trash into the trash bins.
- Take pictures whenever you can
Basically just enjoy your time here and have fun.
What To Expect?
The minute you first step foot into this area, you’ll be met with amazing views and scenery. The calm white sands flowing around through the windy breeze.
And because there are not usually a lot of people visiting this location, you are free to roam about and do anything you want.
However you always want to check the weather beforehand if you are going to come here.
I made the mistake of not doing that and when I came here, it was well into the 100ºF. It was really hot when I came, and I was sweating like a pig. However that didn’t take away the enjoyment that I had over here.
As long as you plan out well in advance, your trip here will definitely be a delight.
Overall if you get a chance to visit New Mexico, this place is definitely a place where you should stop by at.
