Travel agents use to be very popular back in the old days.

Everybody and anybody who wanted to travel would use a travel agent. They did everything from booking your flights, hotels, cruises, special events, and any other travel related stuff you could think of.

This was back when the internet was still in it’s infancy age.

However in today’s world, the internet has grown very different from before. You could find almost any information you would ever need online. You can also book your travel trips, cruises, hotels or anything all by yourself. This makes traveling much more easier for the common person.

This also meant that travel agents would become less and less useful.

After all, they were the middle man. They made their money by giving you exclusive information and also finding exclusive packages and deals for you where you wouldn’t have found on your own.

However you can find all of that online with a simple google search. There are so many sites online that specialize in helping you make your travels a lot easier. With many of them offering you ways to find cheap airfare and hotel stays to even travel blogs that give out every detail possible about a trip. There is almost no reason to even use a travel agent anymore.

So Why Do They Still Exist?

Many people would think that travel agents would slowly start to disappear as the internet keeps on growing.

But that’s not the case.

Although it’s true that there are a lot less travel agents around then before, many people still use them every year and they are showing no sign of slowing down.

But why is that?

It’s because they still offer some much needed value to the consumer.

There are still certain areas in which they are the experts and are able to get things done in places where you just aren’t sure.

So here is a list of Pros and Cons on “if travel agents are useful or not.”

The Pros

They can find amazing deals fast

Travel agents are able to find all sorts of amazing deals really fast. This is because they are in the travel industry, they most likely have great relationships with other companies that can offer better deals for you. Things like special packaged deals which can cut down savings a lot compared to if you were to book it separately yourself.

They can be your guide

One of the best things about travel agents is that they are professionals. They are ready to help you whenever you need it. Such as if you were to need some information about things to do in a certain location, your travel agent can help you with that. Lost luggage? Don’t worry, your travel agent will be able to get that sorted out. Heck even if you were to have some sort of problem happen before your trip, i’m sure your travel agent will figure something out to get you right back to it.

They’ll handle all the little things

Travel agents can also help manage the little things in life in which you didn’t know was possible. Although all travel agents are different, some might go the extra mile for you. They might have the hotel send in chocolates and flowers to your room or heck they might even upgrade your room for free. I know when I used my travel agent to travel to Japan, they sent me an email with all the local activities happening in the area and where to find them. They also gave me a nice recommendation of awesome places to eat at and if I wanted to have any reserved for me (since I can’t speak Japanese) to just ask them to do it for me.

They don’t cost a lot of money if any

Often times people think that travel agents are costly to use. However that can be far from the truth. In fact, most of them get paid with commission fees from whatever company they are booking you with. Now some travel agents do indeed charge you a fee to help put together an itinerary for you, but you can either get that fee waived or lowered if you end up booking a trip through them. Also be sure to know that negotiation is definitely possible.

They really know their stuff

Travel agents really know their stuff simply because they are in the business and have to always be at the top of their game. They are always up to date with the top travel trends and hot destinations. They can help provide you tips on where the best places to eat are, things to do, and all sorts of things to help save you money. It’s their job after all to know these things.

Best of all – THEY SAVE YOU TIME

The number one reason to ever use a travel agent is to save time. Sure you can do everything yourself online but that would usually take quite a while. You can plan out stuff, research, book things, etc…all of which can take a very long time. If you leave it to the travel agent, they’ll get things all taken cared of while you just sit back and relax.

The Cons

Not all travel agents are the same

This might be obvious, however it is important to always know that not all travel agents are the same. Some are insanely good and some are not too good. It’s important to do some good research on which travel agents to use because good ones will go the extra mile for you, where as bad ones will not be able to help you as much.

Type of trip

Travel agents have many uses which can be very helpful. However you might not even need them at all. You need to first think about what you are going to do and if you are really going to need their services or not. Travel agents are able to provide a plethora of different services, but they do come at a cost. If you were planning a big getaway or honeymoon, then I can definitely see why using a travel agent would be worth it. However if you are just going from Texas to California then you simply do not need a travel agent as you can do all the research yourself.

Bottom line is, are travel agents still useful? Yes, they are!

But only depending on if you are actually going to use them for their uses. Things like making a complex itinerary to a new country, honeymoon, weddings, or any other big event, using a travel agent can definitely benefit you. They will always be there for you and make your life a whole lot easier. However if you were to be traveling some place local or maybe even a backpacker, then you may not need to use a travel agent.
