Best Things To Do In Gangnam
In no particular order, here are the best things to do in Gangnam, Seoul.
Stroll Around Gangnam Station
Lets be honest, who hasn’t heard of the song “Gangnam Style”? If you’re anything like me, then you’ll be wanting to visit the district of Gangnam and dance around just like in the song. In fact, many of the streets around Gangnam have become a hotspot where people dance around and sing to this popular song. For example, if you take Exit 5 at the station, you’ll find a place which has become sort of like a tribute towards the song. Locals and tourists all over gather to this spot and record themselves jamming to the song “Gangnam Style”.
But other than that, the area of Gangnam Station is filled with tons of interesting and unique places for you to visit. From awesome restaurants to cute cafes or even an underground shopping center. You can walk around endlessly and always find something interesting to do.
Cheongdam Fashion Street
There’s a reason why this place is called a fashion street. This street is literally filled with all sorts of big name luxury brands selling all sorts of interesting and expensive things. You’ll find major brands like Burberry, Prada, Louis Vuitton, Hermes, Coach, and many more are all lined up along the area for you to shop at. This is one area where you will definitely feel rich and powerful when casually walking around. So if you love to shop or even window shop, this place is definitely the place to be as fashion is literally everywhere.
Aside from that however, that is probably all that Cheongdam Fashion Street has to offer for you. There are still a few interesting places besides the fashion stores like high end restaurants and cafes, celebrity hair salons, cosmetic shops, plastic surgery clinics and more for you to visit. It’s a place where you can come in as a local or tourist and leave feeling like a celebrity. It’s no wonder this place is also known as the “Celebrity Street”.
Eat, Shop and View At Garosu-gil
Garosu-gil, which is considered as the Soho of Seoul, is a place where aspiring Korean artists used to set up their studios, away from the more expensive Gangnam areas. However now it has become filled with all sorts of Asian and European fusion restaurants, cafes, fashion and designer clothing and accessory boutiques, art galleries and night clubs.
Not only that, but the 700 meter long boulevard is lined up with a bunch of gingko trees, which is also how this area got its name Garosu-gil. It’s a perfect area for people of all types to go out and go on a stroll. Especially in Autumn as the golden gingko leaves imbue a sense of warmth and nostalgia while roaming around. And unlike some other crowded shopping districts like Myeongdong, Garosu-gil actually offers a very welcoming change of pace and is especially suited for trend spotting while cafe hopping.
Check Out Apgujeong Rodeo Street
Apgujeong Rodeo Street alongside Garosu-gil and Cheongdam Fashion Street are together seen as the main fashionable and trendsetting areas in Seoul.
Apgujeong Rodeo Street, which is known for its various fashion shops like clothing stores, shoe stores and accessory shops is a place where people from all over come to shop for some fashion. In fact, one of the main attractions of this place is the Galleria Department Store which is home to a bunch of different luxury brands. So if you are wanting to buy some high end fashion or even see all the new trends, this is definitely the place to be.
This place got its name because in the 90’s, this place was where all the rich young people use to strolla round down the streets decked full of luxury branded clothes and imported cars. They were trying to imitate the lifestyle of the Beverly Hills Rodeo Drive in America.
Check Out Starfield Library
If you like reading books and visiting libraries, one place you must check out is Starfield Library. It is one of the most beautiful libraries in the city of Seoul. You can find the library situated inside COEX Mall and it is located right in the center of the main area. It is a huge library standing around 2 floors tall and around 2,800 square-meters in width, so as you can expect, this place is insanely big. The library is home to over 50,000 books arranged in multiple 13 meter high bookshelves.
You can find a variety of different genres here like science books to history or even fiction and non-fiction books are all readily available for you to read. They even have whole sections of the library that are specifically dedicated to foreign books and famous authors. Plus you can also use iPads here which allows you to read e-books as well.
Aside from the books however, this place also is home to a plethora of events like meeting with authors, book talks, poetry reading, lectures, book concerts and many more interesting things.
Check Out COEX Mall
COEX Mall is an amazing underground mall that is located deep within the confines of the Korea World Trade Center. It is considered to be the biggest and largest underground shopping area in the entire country of South Korea, and also Asia in general. And because it is a mall, you can find over 300 brands for you to shop at. For instance, you can find high end luxury brands, international brands, retail stores, a movie theater, restaurants, and also a food court. It is also home to the world famous Starfield Library which is one of the most beautiful libraries in the country. They also play host to a variety of free exhibitions held throughout the year which is just amazing to see.
But aside from that, COEX Mall isn’t just a mall. In fact, it is much more. With things like an Aquarium which is situated downstairs at the basement level and houses well over 650 species of marine wildlife. It also has a proper concert hall, arcade area, and also a kimchi museum. The kimchi museum is probably my favorite because as you know kimchi is a big thing here in Korea, so it’s to be expected that this museum will have everything you can ever want about knowing in detail what Kimchi is and how its made.
Visit Bongeunsa Temple
Bongeunsa Temple which was once known as Gyeonseongsa Temple, was constructed back in the 10th year of the Silla King Weongseong’s reign. Here at this temple, you can find over 3,479 Buddhist scriptures of over 13 types, including works of Kim Jeong-Hee. But what makes this temple really popular is that it is home to the tallest statue in all of Korea, the Maitreya Buddha, which you can find sitting on the temple grounds.
But aside from the temple, they also play host to a variety of cultural events so that people can learn more about the Korean way of Buddhist practices. For example, one of the most popular programs here at this temple allows you to experience life as a Buddhist Monk. Not only that but some of the other activities they’ll teach you here are dawn services, lotus lantern making, and tea ceremonies whenever you decide to come visit this temple. They also give out guided tours of the temple in English, Japanese, and also Chinese.
It’s a great place to visit especially if you want to learn how to be at peace with ones self, and also enjoy the traditional and amazing atmosphere of this entire place.
View Exhibits At Samsung D’Light
If you are a fan of the company Samsung or have ever used one of their products, then you would absolutely love this place. At one point in time, Samsung was on top of the world when it came to certain products. And with all those products, they have became a powerhouse in electronics. Which is why they have constructed the Samsung D’Light building which is an exhibition center showcasing all their latest and greatest technologies ever developed by Samsung.
You can find this building being located inside the Samsung headquarter building, whichis also attached to the Gangnam Station.
The exhibition basically consists of different floors. The lower floor is a retail store where you can buy any of the Samsung products you can ever want. The first floor is the exhibition floor where you can see all the products they have on exhibition. While the second floor houses all their future plans that they will be doing as well as what technology and products they will be using. So if you are a devout Samsung follower, this will be a dream come true for you.
Stroll Around Banpo Hangang Park
One of the best places to visit in Gangnam is the Banpo Hangang Park. It is situated alongside the Han River which flows through Gangnam. Although you can find a lot of other parks as well along the river, the Banpo Hangang Park is probably the most famous. The park stretches for about 6.4 km and is home to famous attractions like the Banpodaegyo Bridge Moonlight Rainbow Fountain and Moonlight Square. The Moonlight Rainbow Fountain is recorded as the longest bridge fountain with dynamic water jets and lights that move in time to the playing music. The Moonlight Square is a place which attracts visitors by hosting a ton of different events and performances all throughout the year.
The park also offers an inline skating facility and boat or yacht rides along the river which is an extremely fun event to do. Not only that, but you can also find a night market here which is only open on the weekends selling a variety of handmade products and delicious foods. And because it is a park, you can simply come here to roam around, enjoy the scenery, and relax yourself around the bustling atmosphere.
Seoul Bamdokkaebi Night Market
Like we said in the above post, the Banpo Hangang Park has a night market for you to visit. This night market opens every Friday and Saturday from 6:00pm to 11:00 pm. Just strolling around here you can find a variety of vendors selling all kinds of interesting things. From clothes to jewelry or even accessories, this place has it all. Plus all the items are really cheap as some vendors even allow you to haggle with them. But the best part about this night market is that you can find all sorts of delicious foods to eat. Anything from mandus to cheesy hotdogs or even kimchi noodles are all on the table. You can literally eat from one end to the next and always find something new to eat.
So why not come visit and stroll around, look at some awesome items and maybe even buy a few, all while eating some delicious foods.
Samneung Park is one of the most famous parks in all of Seoul. The reason for this is that it plays an important role in Korean history because this park is the burial grounds for three important tombs from the Joseon Dynasty. Buried beneath these grounds lie the resting place of King Seongjong (9th king of Joseon era), his wife Queen Jonghyeon and King Jungjong (11th King of Joseon era). While the tombs have been dug up by Japanese soldiers during the Japanese invasion of Korea in 1592, it has since been restored to their formal selves.
The park in general is a peaceful place that is surrounded by a dense, calming forest which is a welcoming change from that of the city. It’s a great place to relax, roam around, and imbue yourself with a deep sense of Korean history. Plus this place has also been declared as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in the year of 2009, which makes this so much more important.
SM TOWN (Kpop) At COEX
Located next to the fabulous Starfield COEX Mall, SM Town is definitely the place to be if you love all things K-pop. It is the brainchild of one of South Korea’s largest entertainment company, SM Entertainment. It is a free admission culture complex space that houses everything SM. The building boasts of six floors full of merchandize, photo opportunities, theaters, various activities and more.
It’s also a place where you can meet various artists like TVXQ, EXO, Red Velvet, NCT, Girls Generation and more….although not really in person. You can also learn the history of all the top k-pop artists from the beginning of their careers to the present day and see all of their albums and costumes on full display.
So if you love k-pop and everything SM Entertainment, then you will definitely love to visit this location.
Fangirl Over K-Pop Companies
If you love k-pop then you’ll be pleased to know that Gangnam is “THE” place to be for everything k-pop. Here you’ll find some of the biggest and most popular Korean Entertainment companies like SM, JYP, Cube and more all located around the area. This means that you’ll have a good chance at spotting one of the major Korean Celebrities because they occasionally will be strolling around the streets and cafes. If you are lucky, you might even run into one and be able to get a picture with them! Which is why it is not uncommon to find many locals and tourists alike who come here waiting eagerly outside in hopes of trying to catch a glimpse of their favorite stars.
Gamble At Seven Luck Casino
As you know, casinos are actually illegal in Seoul….at least for the locals. But there is a loophole in the law where it says foreigners can are totally free and okay to gamble at these locations. Which is why this casino is definitely something you need to experience as the gambling culture is vastly different than those you experienced in the states. Plus it is totally easy to get yourself in one of these casinos by just showing some id that says you are a foreigner.
It is commonly considered to be one of the best casinos in the entire city of Seoul, although there isn’t really a lot to compare it to. The casino has over 78 Table games which includes the like of Baccarat, Black Jack, Poker, Roulette and more. They also have over 108 up to date machine games and 45 electronic tables on three floors for you to play on.
And because this casino is easily located near various popular attractions like COEX center, hotels, duty-free shops, and department stores, visitors can fully enjoy a wonderful experience while also being able to have lots of fun.
Jamsil Baseball Stadium
Baseball is one of the worlds most popular sports, and especially so in South Korea. Which is why if you ever get a chance to visit the city of Seoul, you need to go check out Jamsil Baseball Stadium. It is one of the most popular attractions to visit especially for people who love baseball.
It is located just on the outskirts of Gangnam and is considered to be the first ever baseball stadium to be built in South Korea. Not only that, but this place is also home to two different teams (Doosan Bears and LG Twins). Whenever it’s baseball season, you can expect to find games being played here every day of the week besides Mondays which is an off day.
So if you ever feel like watching a baseball game, this is definitely the spot to go. Grab a hot dog, watch the game, and enjoy cheering with the crowds. This is an experience you simply can’t miss out on.
If you love fried chicken, then you will absolutely love Kyochon Chicken. This is basically South Korea’s answer to the American Kentucky Fried Chicken. This place is insanely popular in Korea and people from all over love to come to this place for some delicious fried chicken. And the branch in Gangnam is relatively their most famous one. With a welcoming vibe and a friendly staff, this place is always packed full of people.
You can choose things like spicy chicken with a smoky taste, fried chicken made with rice flour, garlic soy chicken, red pepper sauce chicken, honey and lots more for you to choose from. I guarantee once you take a bite out of this chicken, you will never look at KFC the same way again.
It’s also really easy to find too as the restaurant can be accessed from both the Gangnam Station and the Sinnonhyeon Station.
Kakao Friends Store
If you ever heard of the Korean messaging app KakaoTalk, then this place should be very familiar to you. This store is basically revolving around a group of cartoon characters that were created as a part of the Korean Messaging app. These characters have became so popular and have had appearances on commercials, drink containers, and even credit cards. They are a huge hit with people as many stores and cafes have even opened up modeling their theme after them.
And the branch store in Gangnam is probably the most popular one as it is the flagship store for the series. Inside the store, you can find over 2,000 products which ranges from stickers, shirts, jewelry, toys and more for you to buy. To be honest, you don’t even need to be a fan or even know who they are to come visit here as the characters themselves are just insanely cute. So come on by, take some pictures with them, maybe buy a few items, and you will definitely feel at ease.
Check Out A Figure Museum
The figure museum is as you expected, a place that is dedicated to all things figurines and toys. Visitors who have an interest or passion in anime, figurines, toys and more should definitely come visit this location as it’ll make you feel like a kid in candy land. You’ll find various different exhibitions being on show which features many things like superhero’s or even animated figurines. You’ll find things like Astroboy, Iron Man, Funko Pops, Rare Collectibles, Statues and more all waiting to be seen.
The building has 5 floors which includes a basement level area. The basement area is filled with figures of various sizes and die-cast supercars. And the 5th floor is a room that displays information on specially selected exclusive figures and limited edition figures through interactive kiosks
Simone Handbag Museum
The Simone Handbag Museum in Gangnam is a museum dedicated to all things handbags. Here you’ll find over 300 special handbags on display at the museum which dates ranges from the early 1550’s all the way to present day. The museum is divided into two halves, Twentieth Century and Contemporary, and Historic. The building this museum is located in actually resembles a handbag which is a perfect sight to see. Most of the handbags here are of European origin, with some contemporary bags from the United States.
Overall it is an interesting location to visit especially if you are into vintage and beautiful handbags. The collection was assembled with a cost of around $1million dollars, so you can expect to find quite a few amazing handbags here as well.
Visit Nearby Lotte World
Although not really in the district of Gangnam, but more on the outskirts of it, you can find a theme park called Lotte World. This theme park is only a few minutes away by the train station which makes it a convenient location to visit.
It is literally the perfect place to go for all things fun and entertainment. Inside this theme park, you can find things like thrilling rides an ice rink, different kinds of parades, a lake, accommodations, department stores and more.
